Snowshoeing in Jackson Hole: First Timer’s Guide

Most people know Jackson for its amazing slopes for skiers and snowboarders, but this area is also perfect for another snowy sport – snowshoeing! Discover why many find the quietness of a winter wonderland so inviting with just the crunch of snow under their feet and the picturesque landscape around them.

Where To Go

Grand Teton National Park is a great place to go for a day of snowshoeing. Browse the Park map for trailhead information as well as the length of loops so you can choose the best plan for all levels of experience. (Some roads in the Park are closed to vehicles in the winter but are groomed for cross country skiers and also include a path for multi-use including snowshoeing.)

Guided Tours

We suggest that you schedule at least one guided tour during your stay! Hole Hiking Snowshoe Tours are led by naturalists who know the area, know the wildlife and can provide you with an unforgettable day. They offer 2-, 4- or 6-hour tours and even have a Snowshoe and Sleigh tour that includes lunch at Moose, WY and a horse-drawn sleigh ride at the end of the day on the National Elk Refuge. Other guides include Eco Tour Adventures.

Equipment

Guided tour companies include snowshoes, but if you want to go out on your own and need to rent snowshoes and gear, visit Skinny Skis in Jackson. Snowshoes are only $10 for ½ day, $15 for a full day. This is a great way for a beginner to test things out before buying their own. You can also check out Teton Backcountry Rentals.  If this is your first time out, here’s a checklist of things to think about for gear. It’s always good to be prepared for the change in winter weather whether you’re on the local trails outside of town or deep in the woods.

We know you’ll enjoy seeing the winter wilderness of the Tetons while snowshoeing across the snow!
